Oars & Oarlocks
Oars and oarlocks were vital components of propulsion systems on ships. Oars, typically made of wood, were long, slender poles with flat blades at one end. They were used to row vessels such as a lifeboats. Oarlocks, also known as rowlocks or thole pins, were U-shaped fittings attached to the sides of the ship’s hull. They served as pivot points for the oars, allowing them to move back and forth smoothly. The primary purpose of oars and oarlocks was to provide an alternative means of propulsion when the wind was insufficient or unfavorable. Sailors would row in unison, pulling the oars through the water to generate forward motion. Oarlocks played a crucial role in this process by securing the oars in place and allowing them to pivot freely. They provided stability and control, ensuring efficient rowing and minimizing strain on the rowers. Wooden Ship Model Fittings Oars and Oarlocks come in a range of sizes in both wood and plastic.
