Capstans
Capstans were essential mechanical devices on ships, used for various tasks that required heavy lifting or the application of significant pulling force. These vertical winches were typically made of wood or iron and featured a large drum-shaped cylinder with a horizontal axle. The capstan was positioned on the ship’s deck, often near the bow or stern, and operated by a team of sailors using bars inserted into sockets on the drum. The primary purpose of a capstan was to raise or lower heavy objects, such as anchors or cargo, using the rotational force applied by the sailors. When required, the sailors would walk in a circle around the capstan, pushing or pulling the bars, causing the drum to rotate and either raise or lower the load. Capstans provided a mechanical advantage, allowing the crew to exert force efficiently and handle heavy loads that would otherwise be impractical or impossible to manage manually. Capstans were vital tools for the operation and functionality of old sailing ships, enabling the crew to carry out tasks that required significant lifting or pulling force with relative ease. Wooden Model Ship Fittings Capstans come in wood and brass and come in range of sizes and shapes.
